MANILA – The Philippines and the Maldives have negotiated a draft air services agreement, making direct flights between the 2 countries “closer to reality,” the Department of Transportation said Tuesday.
Under the draft that was negotiated over 2 days from Monday, airlines from both nations will each get a weekly entitlement of 1,200 seats, the DOTr said in a statement.
To promote Philippine airports outside Manila, flights originating from outside the Ninoy Aquino International Airport will be unlimited, the DOTr said.
The DOTr said it negotiated the draft agreement, together with officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Civil Aeronautics Board, Department of Tourism, Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Labor and Employment.
The Maldives delegation was composed of officials from the country’s Civil Aviation Authority.
A tropical nation off the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent, the Maldives is known for its paradise-like resorts that attract tourists worldwide.
